Pathways To Immigration Success

December 2013

Let me welcome you to a New Year.

We will see some immigration changes this year. If we work together, and keep our friends and relatives informed, many of these reforms will be positive.

Allow me to explain.

Looking back at 2013, it does not appear that much good took place for immigrants. Immigration reform was not passed.

Over 360,000 deportations took place. The immigration court system is still a big mess, causing more and more judges to retire or leave the bench due to the stress and overload. There is now a shortage of immigration judges. And the family unity system remains broken.

I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving Day.

For those who are currently engaged with fighting against deportation and removal, I know this is a difficult time to be grateful.

It appears immigration reform is dead for 2013.

I do not think this is a bad thing because the proposal Congress was talking about passing, S.744, had many bad aspects to it.

If you’re confused about immigration reform, you’re not alone.

One day, reports suggest Congress will pass immigration reform before the end of the month.

The next day, newspaper stories proclaim the death of immigration reform for 2013 is near.

I’ve been involved with politics since I was in my late teen years. I worked inside the political system for over a decade. As a result, I’m not surprised or fooled by much that happens in Washington, D.C.

But this year, I’m watching a new approach to political jockeying unfold. The two sides are trying to define the parameters of an immigration reform package to vote on, long before they even address particular agenda items.
